Live vs async online coaching.

A coach on video with you for every workout, or a coach who writes your plan in an app and checks in later? Here is how they differ, with prices checked October 14, 2026.

Full disclosure: HipTrain wrote this page, and we sell live coaching. We have tried to be fair. Every fact about another service comes from its own website or a named review site, with a link. Prices checked October 14, 2026. They change often, so confirm before you sign up, and tell us if something is out of date and we will fix it.

The short answer

Live coaching means your coach is with you on video for the whole workout. Async coaching means your coach writes a plan in an app, you train on your own, and they check in later by message or call. Live gives you real-time form correction and a set time to show up. Async gives you freedom to train whenever you want. Most of the big online coaching apps are async. HipTrain is live, every session, from $59.49 a month.

For async services, a price "per session" does not really apply: you can do as many self-guided workouts as you like. HipTrain's price covers the live sessions on your plan (4 to 13 a month, depending on the plan).

How live coaching works

You book a time. Your coach joins the video call, warms you up, and leads the whole session. If your knee does not like a lunge, they swap it on the spot. If your form slips on rep eight, they see it. The session is built around you, and you never have to plan a workout. The tradeoff: you need to be on camera at a set time, and the number of sessions depends on your plan.

How async coaching works

A coach builds your program in an app, usually after an intro call. You do the workouts on your own schedule, log them, and the coach adjusts the plan and answers questions by message, video message or periodic calls. The tradeoff: nobody is watching while you lift, so you rely on yourself for form and for showing up.

Who should pick which

  • Pick live if you are new to exercise or coming back after a break, if you are working around a past injury or limitation (with your doctor's OK), if you are over 50 and want someone watching your balance and form, or if you need an appointment to stay consistent.
  • Pick async if you already know your way around a gym, want to train five or six days a week on your own time, or travel across time zones and cannot commit to set times.
  • Not sure? Try both. HipTrain's first session is free with no credit card, Trainwell has a 14-day free trial, and Future offers a full refund if you cancel within 30 days.

Where HipTrain is not the right fit

HipTrain is a small company. Our iOS app has 29 ratings, far fewer than the apps above. We do not offer nutrition coaching, in-person sessions, or a big on-demand workout library. If you want daily food tracking, Kickoff includes it. If you want unlimited self-guided workouts, an async app fits better.

Questions

What is async coaching?

Async (asynchronous) coaching means you and your coach are not working out together at the same time. The coach writes your plan in an app, you do the workouts on your own, and you get feedback later by message, video message or a scheduled call.

What is live online personal training?

Live online personal training means your coach is on a video call with you for the whole workout. They watch your form, count your reps and change exercises in real time. HipTrain works this way every session.

Is live coaching better than an app?

Not for everyone. Live coaching suits people who want someone watching their form, who are new to exercise or working around limits, or who need a set appointment to show up. An app suits confident exercisers who want to train any time, as often as they like.

Which is cheaper, live or async coaching?

It depends on how often you train. On the prices listed above, HipTrain's live plans start at $59.49 a month, while the app-based coaching plans we checked run from $95 to $200 or more a month. Async plans include as many self-guided workouts as you want; HipTrain includes the live sessions on your plan.

Is Peloton's personal trainer live?

According to Peloton and The Clip Out, Peloton Personal Trainer is powered by Trainwell, costs $99.99 a month on top of a Peloton membership, and workouts are done on your own schedule, with video used for onboarding and check-ins rather than live workouts.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for coaching?

Sometimes. HipTrain works with Truemed for HSA and FSA reimbursement: you pay with a regular card, take Truemed's health survey the same day, and if a licensed provider issues a Letter of Medical Necessity you submit for reimbursement. Check your plan. Future also works with Truemed, and Kickoff says it is FSA/HSA eligible. See HSA / FSA with HipTrain.
