HipTrain vs Beachbody (BODi): live coaching or streaming programs?

BODi streams hundreds of workout programs you follow on your own. HipTrain gives you a coach, live on video, just for you. Here is how to choose.

★★★★★ 5.0 on GoogleFrom $14 a sessionFirst session free, no cardHSA / FSA eligible

Full disclosure: we're HipTrain, and we wrote this comparison of ourselves and BODi, the streaming service from Beachbody. We're biased, so every fact about BODi here comes from what BODi publishes or a named source, listed at the end.

The short answer

Choose BODi if you want a big library of follow-along programs and meal plans to use on your own time, at a low price. Choose HipTrain if you want a real coach with you, live on video, who adjusts each workout to your body. BODi costs less: $19 a month, or $179 a year at full price. HipTrain starts at $59.49 a month for one live session a week. It comes down to whether you want a library or a person.

How HipTrain works

HipTrain is live, 1-on-1 personal training on video. You answer a two-minute questionnaire, and we match you with a coach who fits your goals and your calendar. Sign-up to first session can happen in under a day.

Your coach is with you in real time. They watch your form, swap exercises when something doesn't feel right, and push you when you're ready. It's the same coach every session, and if it isn't a fit, we rematch you. You don't need a gym or equipment. Chat with your coach between sessions, and reschedule anytime in the app.

  • 30-minute or 60-minute sessions, 1 to 3 times a week
  • Vetted, certified coaches, with specialties like strength, HIIT, mobility, Pilates and stretching
  • First session free, no credit card needed
"I joined HipTrain a couple of months ago and am already so much stronger. I work with Felipe twice weekly, and he is great: super enthusiastic, supportive, always has a new set of exercises to challenge me." (Emily G., Google review)

How BODi works

BODi is Beachbody's streaming service (it used to be called Beachbody On Demand). Its subscription page lists "225+ fitness programs spanning duration, level, and workout type," "healthy meal plans with over 1,000 recipes," "step-by-step guidance from world-class trainers," and access to the BODi community. Programs include well-known names like P90X, Insanity and 21 Day Fix. You stream workouts and follow along on your own.

The annual plan is $179 a year. When we checked, BODi was offering the first year for $119 (about $9.92 a month), renewing at $179. BODi also sells a monthly plan at $19 a month. BODi offers a 7-day free trial, and its plans are backed by a 31-day money-back guarantee (BODi says this excludes subscriptions started from a free trial).

BODi does not advertise live 1-on-1 sessions with a personal trainer, and we didn't find HSA or FSA terms on its site.

When BODi might make sense

  • You want lots of programs to choose from, at the lowest price.
  • You like following a set multi-week program on your own time.
  • You want meal plans and recipes in the same subscription.
  • You already know the moves and don't need someone checking your form.

Pricing compared

Here are the published prices.

  • HipTrain, 30-minute sessions: $59.49 a month for 1 a week, $119.99 for 2 a week, $179.99 for 3 a week. About $14 a session.
  • HipTrain, 60-minute sessions: $109.99 a month for 1 a week, $219.99 for 2 a week, $319.99 for 3 a week. About $25 a session.
  • BODi: $19 a month, or $179 a year (about $14.92 a month). Current offer: $119 for the first year.

BODi is cheaper. Its full-price yearly plan costs about what one month of HipTrain at three 30-minute sessions a week costs. Over a year, BODi is $179. One 30-minute HipTrain session a week for a year is $713.88 ($59.49 x 12).

What the extra money buys is a person, live, watching how you move and adjusting each workout for you. HipTrain is also HSA / FSA eligible, which can lower your real cost if your plan approves it. See all our plans in the pricing section.

Where HipTrain isn't the right fit

If you want a big library and meal plans for very little money, BODi offers things we don't. HipTrain has no big on-demand library and no nutrition coaching or meal plans. You need to show up on camera at a booked time. We also have far fewer reviews than big brands (29 App Store ratings), a small coach roster, and no in-person sessions.

Who should pick which

  • If you want the most workouts for the lowest price, pick BODi.
  • If you want a coach correcting your form as you go, pick HipTrain.
  • If you've started home programs before and stalled, and want someone expecting you, pick HipTrain.
  • If you want meal plans bundled with workouts, pick BODi.
  • If you're new to exercise or have limits that need adjusting, pick HipTrain.
