Peloton's 1-on-1 trainer builds you a weekly plan of classes you do on your own. HipTrain's coach trains with you live on video. Here is how to choose.
Full disclosure: HipTrain wrote this page, and we're one of the two options on it. So yes, we're biased. Every fact about Peloton Personal Trainer comes from Peloton's own pages, and our sources are listed at the end.
This page is about Peloton's 1-on-1 coaching add-on. If you're comparing HipTrain with Peloton's classes and equipment, see HipTrain vs Peloton.
Both give you a dedicated, certified trainer. The difference is when that trainer is with you. Peloton Personal Trainer, powered by Trainwell, builds you a weekly plan of Peloton classes and custom workouts, and you do them on your own schedule, with unlimited messaging and video check-ins. HipTrain's coach trains with you live on video, every session, watching your form as you go. Choose Peloton Personal Trainer if you already have a Peloton All-Access or App+ membership and love the classes. Choose HipTrain if you want a coach in the room with you, live, and don't want a membership on top.
HipTrain is live personal training over video. You answer a two-minute questionnaire, and we match you with a certified coach who fits your goals and your calendar. Many people go from sign-up to a first session in under a day.
At the time you booked, your coach meets you on video, watches your form and adjusts as you go. It's the same coach every session, and if it isn't a fit, we rematch you. You don't need a bike, a treadmill or any equipment. Join from a phone, tablet or computer, chat with your coach between sessions, and reschedule anytime in the app.
"Felipe is a great trainer. He's very encouraging and I love the variety of exercises and the focus on proper form. I also love just showing up and having a custom plan ready to go. No planning needed!" (Luke D., Google review)
Peloton Personal Trainer is Peloton's 1-on-1 coaching add-on, "powered by Trainwell." Peloton says Trainwell employs and manages the trainers and runs the platform. All trainers are certified by a nationally accredited organization and have 3+ years of experience. You take a short quiz, Trainwell suggests up to three trainer matches, and you pick one or ask for a different match. Then you have an intro video call to go over your history, goals and schedule.
Your trainer builds a weekly plan from Peloton classes and custom workouts, with rest days and recovery guidance, and updates it when your week changes. Peloton is clear about the format: "Workouts are completed asynchronously on your schedule," and "Live video calls are used for onboarding and occasional check-ins, not for live workout sessions." You get unlimited messaging and video check-ins in the Peloton Personal Trainer app.
It costs $99.99 a month, billed by Trainwell, and it's separate from your Peloton membership. You need an active All-Access or App+ membership. It's not available on App One or Guide-only memberships. There's a 14-day free trial that starts after your onboarding call, and a credit card is required. Peloton calls it a "limited-access beta," available in the US on iOS devices only, with a waitlist and no guarantee of access.
Here's the monthly math using published prices.
If you don't have a Peloton membership yet, the lowest total for Peloton Personal Trainer is $128.98 a month with App+. For about the same money, $119.99, HipTrain gives you two live 30-minute sessions a week. If you already pay for All-Access for your bike, the add-on itself is $99.99, which sits between our 60-minute, 1-a-week plan ($109.99) and our 30-minute, 1-a-week plan ($59.49). To be fair, Peloton's price includes the full class library and unlimited messaging, and ours doesn't include a class library. See every plan in our pricing section.
We'd rather you pick the right thing than pick us. You need to show up at a scheduled time on camera with HipTrain. If you want to ride or lift whenever the mood strikes, a plan you follow on your own fits better. We don't have a class library, music-driven classes or equipment, and we don't offer in-person sessions. We also have far fewer reviews than Peloton or Trainwell (29 App Store ratings) and a small coach roster.
Not for workouts. Peloton says workouts are done on your own schedule, and live video calls are for onboarding and occasional check-ins. HipTrain sessions are live every time.
It's powered by Trainwell. Trainwell employs the trainers, runs the app and bills the $99.99 a month. You can also buy Trainwell directly. See HipTrain vs Trainwell and Trainwell alternatives.
HipTrain's first session is free, with no credit card. Peloton Personal Trainer has a 14-day free trial that starts after your onboarding call, and a card is required.
For someone without a Peloton membership, HipTrain. Our plans start at $59.49 a month, and Peloton Personal Trainer starts at $128.98 a month with App+. For other options, see Peloton alternatives, FORME alternatives and the best live online personal trainers.
