Five honest options if you want the same coach every time, a lower price per live session, or a plan you follow on your own.
Full disclosure: HipTrain wrote this page, and we're the first option on the list. So yes, we have a stake in it. Every fact about other companies comes from what they publish on their own sites, and the sources are at the end.
Echelon Coach, which used to be called FlexIt, offers live 1-on-1 video sessions with trainers and other specialists. You pick 30, 45 or 60 minutes and buy sessions on a monthly plan or pay as you go. People look for alternatives for a few structural reasons. They want one coach who sees them every week, not a platform where you can book many trainers. They want a lower price per live session or no 2-month minimum. Or they want a plan they can follow on their own time. If you like mixing trainers, nutritionists and other specialists, Echelon Coach may still be the best fit. We cover that below too.
HipTrain is live, 1-on-1 personal training over video, the same basic idea as Echelon Coach. The difference is the setup. We match you with one coach, and you see that coach every session at times you book, so they get to know how you move. If it isn't a fit, we rematch you. You pick 1, 2 or 3 sessions a week, 30 or 60 minutes each.Thirty-minute plans cost $59.49, $119.99 or $179.99 a month (about $14 a session). Sixty-minute plans cost $109.99, $219.99 or $319.99 a month (about $25 a session). Your first session is free with no credit card, and HipTrain is HSA / FSA eligible.
"My trainer is Demian and he is great with checking in to make sure the exercises are not causing discomfort. He is also very flexible with my changing schedules, and he is very patient." (Andrea M., Google review)
Where we're not the right fit: we don't offer nutritionists, dietitians or other specialists to book, and we have a small coach roster with far fewer reviews than bigger names (29 App Store ratings). More in HipTrain vs Echelon Coach.
Best for: people who want the same live coach every week at the lowest price per session.
Bespoke Fit offers live 1-on-1 video training with a "Same dedicated coach," on one unlimited plan. Sessions are "typically 45 to 60 minutes," booked week by week with your coach. It costs $49 for the first month, then $299 a month for its 25 founding members, and $499 a month for everyone after that. There's no contract and a 30-day money-back guarantee. It doesn't mention HSA or FSA. More in HipTrain vs Bespoke Fit.
Best for: people who want to train live four or more times a week for one flat price.
Trainwell gives you a dedicated trainer who builds and updates a workout plan in its app. You talk "via text, video messages, and live calls," but you do the workouts on your own time. It costs $149 a month, billed in 3-month increments, after a 14-day free trial that starts with a 40-minute call. Trainwell says you "may be eligible" for HSA or FSA reimbursement. Best for: people who want a trainer's plan without booking live sessions.
Peloton Personal Trainer is powered by Trainwell. A trainer builds weekly plans from Peloton classes and custom workouts, with unlimited messaging and video check-ins. Peloton says "Workouts are completed asynchronously on your schedule," and live video calls are for onboarding and occasional check-ins. It's $99.99 a month, billed by Trainwell, on top of a Peloton All-Access or App+ membership, with a 14-day free trial. It's a limited beta with a waitlist, on iOS only. Future pairs you with a coach who creates your program, checks in and "holds you accountable," and you train with its app. It doesn't advertise live video workouts. Future lists "$50 first month, then $199/month," with a full refund if you cancel within 30 days, or $149 a month on a 12-month plan.
Best for: people who want a coach's plan and check-ins but train on their own schedule.
Echelon Coach has real strengths, and switching has a cost. Stay with it if:
Monthly plans need a 2-month minimum. For comparison, four 30-minute live sessions a month cost $164 on Echelon Coach's monthly plan, and $59.49 with HipTrain. Four 60-minute sessions cost $328 on Echelon Coach's monthly plan, and $109.99 with HipTrain.
Yes. FlexIt is now Echelon Coach. Its plans page still mentions "the FlexIt app," so you may see both names.
Per live session, HipTrain. Our 30-minute sessions work out to about $14 each on a monthly plan. Bespoke Fit can cost less per session if you train live four or more times a week on its founding rate.
HipTrain is HSA / FSA eligible. Echelon Coach says you "may be able" to and asks you to call. Trainwell says you "may be eligible." Always check your own plan.
HipTrain's first session is free with no card. Trainwell and Peloton Personal Trainer offer 14 days free. Echelon Coach's first session is $5.
