Five honest options if you want fewer sessions for less, pay-per-session training, or coaching through an app instead.
Full disclosure: HipTrain wrote this page, and we're the first option on the list. So yes, we have a stake in it. Every fact about other companies comes from what they publish on their own sites, and the sources are at the end.
Bespoke Fit offers live 1-on-1 video training with the same coach, on one unlimited plan: $49 for the first month, then $299 a month for founding members, and $499 a month once its 25 founding spots fill. People look around for a few structural reasons. They only want one or two sessions a week and don't need unlimited. They want shorter 30-minute sessions. They want to pay per session, or they'd rather follow a plan on their own time. Or they want to pay with HSA or FSA funds, which Bespoke Fit doesn't mention. If you train live four or more times a week, Bespoke Fit may already be your best deal. We cover that below too.
HipTrain is live, 1-on-1 personal training over video, like Bespoke Fit. You book a time, join from your phone, tablet or computer, and your coach trains you in real time, watching your form and adjusting as you go. It's the same coach every session, and you can switch anytime. The difference is the plan: you pick 1, 2 or 3 sessions a week, 30 or 60 minutes each. Thirty-minute plans cost $59.49, $119.99 or $179.99 a month (about $14 a session). Sixty-minute plans cost $109.99, $219.99 or $319.99 a month (about $25 a session). Your first session is free with no credit card, and HipTrain is HSA / FSA eligible.
"The trainer I was linked with after a survey of my needs and schedule was Miranda. She is just amazing, she is encouraging, understanding of my physical limitations and I can take her anywhere!" (Kathleen M., Google review)
Where we're not the right fit: our plans stop at three sessions a week, so if you want to train live more often, Bespoke Fit's unlimited plan suits you better. We also have far fewer reviews than the big apps (29 App Store ratings) and a small coach roster. More in HipTrain vs Bespoke Fit.
Best for: one or two live sessions a week, or 30-minute sessions, at the lowest monthly price.
Echelon Coach (formerly FlexIt) also offers live 1-on-1 video sessions. You choose 30, 45 or 60 minutes and either a monthly plan or pay-as-you-go. A monthly 30-minute plan is $164 for 4 sessions ($41 each), with a 2-month minimum, and bigger plans cost less per session. A single 30-minute session is $48, and new members can try the first one for $5. Your package works with "any trainer on the Echelon Coach platform," including nutritionists and other specialists listed there. It says you "may be able" to pay with HSA or FSA funds and asks you to call. More in Echelon Coach alternatives.
Best for: people who want to mix trainers and specialists, or buy sessions without a monthly plan.
Trainwell gives you a dedicated trainer who builds and updates a workout plan in its app. You talk "via text, video messages, and live calls," but you do the workouts on your own time. It costs $149 a month, billed in 3-month increments, after a 14-day free trial that starts with a 40-minute call. Trainwell says you "may be eligible" for HSA or FSA reimbursement. More in HipTrain vs Trainwell.
Best for: people who want a trainer's plan without booking live sessions.
Future pairs you with a coach who creates your program, checks in and "holds you accountable," and you train with its app. It doesn't advertise live video workouts. Future lists "$50 first month, then $199/month," with a full refund if you cancel within 30 days. On a 12-month plan, it's $149 a month. More in HipTrain vs Future.
Best for: people who want a coach's plan and check-ins but train on their own schedule.
FORME offers live 1:1 personal training through its app and on its Studio and Lift smart gyms. Its main site now leads with hardware for "residential, hospitality, and commercial fitness settings," and the Studio and Lift pages say "Contact Sales" instead of listing a price. FORME's help center describes a $49 a month membership with its class library, and says live 1:1 sessions cost extra. We couldn't find the live training price on its public pages, so ask FORME before you join. More in FORME alternatives.
Best for: people who own or want a FORME smart gym.
Bespoke Fit does something none of the other options here does: unlimited live sessions for one flat monthly price. Stay with it if:
For one or two sessions a week, yes. HipTrain starts at $59.49 a month for four 30-minute live sessions, and $109.99 a month for four 60-minute sessions. If you train four or more times a week, Bespoke Fit's founding rate can cost less per session.
HipTrain, Echelon Coach and FORME offer live 1-on-1 video sessions. Trainwell and Future coach mainly through an app, and you do the workouts on your own time.
HipTrain is HSA / FSA eligible. Trainwell says you "may be eligible," and Echelon Coach says you "may be able" to and asks you to call. Bespoke Fit doesn't mention it. Always check your own plan.
HipTrain's first session is free with no card. Trainwell offers 14 days free. Echelon Coach's first session is $5, and Future's first month is $50 with a 30-day full refund.
