Five honest options, depending on whether you want help with food, with exercise, or with both.
Full disclosure: HipTrain wrote this page, and we're one of the options on it. That means we're biased. We've kept every fact about other companies to what they publish, with sources at the end.
Noom's headline is "Meds to lose the weight. Noom to keep it off." Its core program, Noom Weight, teaches eating habits through daily lessons, food logging and a coach who checks in through the app. It costs $70 for one month or $209 for 12 months, and Noom also offers GLP-1 medication programs. Noom is mainly about food and habits. People look elsewhere when they want a live trainer for exercise, a lower price, help from a dietitian that insurance may cover, or simple food tracking without lessons. Before you switch, decide which part you need help with, because some of these options cover food, some cover exercise, and one covers both.
HipTrain is live, 1-on-1 personal training over video. It covers the part of the picture Noom mostly leaves to you: exercise, with a real person guiding you. Your coach watches your form, adjusts each exercise, and keeps you moving. It's the same coach every session, and you can switch anytime. Thirty-minute sessions cost $59.49/mo for one a week, $119.99/mo for two, or $179.99/mo for three, about $14 a session. Sixty-minute sessions cost $109.99/mo, $219.99/mo or $319.99/mo, about $25 a session. Your first session is free, no credit card needed. HipTrain is HSA / FSA eligible, so check your plan.
"The trainer I was linked with after a survey of my needs and schedule was Miranda. She is just amazing, she is encouraging, understanding of my physical limitations and I can take her anywhere!" (Kathleen M., Google review)
Where we're not the right fit: HipTrain does not offer nutrition coaching, meal plans or medication, so we don't replace Noom's food side. Some people keep Noom for food and add HipTrain for exercise. You also need to show up on camera at a set time, our coach roster is small, and we have far fewer reviews than the big apps (29 App Store ratings). See HipTrain vs Noom for the full comparison.
Best for: people who want a trainer for the exercise side, alongside Noom or instead of it.
Kickoff pairs you with a coach who is both a dietitian and a trainer. You get a weekly video call plus daily texts. Kickoff says it's "$0 out-of-pocket" through insurance with Aetna, Cigna, UHC, BCBS and 100+ plans, and $250/mo if you pay yourself. It offers a coach-swap guarantee and has a 4.83 rating from 3,932 iOS ratings. More in HipTrain vs Kickoff.
Best for: people who want food and exercise coaching from one person, especially if their insurance covers it.
MyFitnessPal is a tracking app. The free version covers basic food, weight and exercise tracking. Premium adds tools like barcode and voice logging, custom macro goals, intermittent fasting tracking and no ads. Premium costs $19.99/mo or $79.99/yr, with a 7-day free trial for new users. It does not include a coach.
Best for: people who liked Noom's food logging and want to keep tracking on their own for less.
Future calls itself "Personal training, reimagined." A coach builds your workouts, you do them in the app on your own time, and you text with your coach. Future does not advertise live video sessions. It costs $199/mo, with a $50 first month, or $149/mo if you prepay for 12 months. It offers a 30-day full refund and accepts HSA and FSA through Truemed. More in HipTrain vs Future.
Best for: people who want a personal workout plan and a coach to text, without a set session time.
obé is a streaming library with more than 16,000 on-demand classes, including HIIT, dance cardio, Pilates, barre, strength, yoga and stretching. Its FAQ says "We no longer stream live classes." It costs $24.99/mo or $169.99/yr, with 7 days free, and works with Truemed for HSA/FSA with a Letter of Medical Necessity.
Best for: people who want lots of workout variety at home for a low monthly price.
Noom does things none of the exercise options above do. Stay with Noom if:
