Five options to consider if you want live sessions, a different price, or a different kind of coaching than Trainwell.
A quick note before we start: this page is written by HipTrain, and we're listed first. That makes us biased, and we'd rather say so up front. Everything we say about other companies comes from their own published information, linked at the bottom.
Trainwell (formerly CoPilot) says it offers "Personal Training You'll Actually Stick With," and it holds a 4.90 rating from 5,532 ratings on the iOS App Store. Coaching happens mostly through the app, with workouts, messages and calls. Trainwell lists $149/mo billed quarterly. People look for alternatives when they want a coach who trains them live on video, a lower monthly cost, or help with nutrition. If Trainwell's app style suits you, staying may be the right call. We'll explain when.
HipTrain is live personal training over video, 1-on-1. You pick a time that fits your week, join with one tap, and a real coach works with you in real time and adjusts as you go. It's the same coach every session, and you can switch anytime if it isn't working. No gym or equipment needed. Thirty-minute sessions are $59.49/mo for one a week, $119.99/mo for two, or $179.99/mo for three, about $14 a session. Sixty-minute sessions are $109.99/mo, $219.99/mo or $319.99/mo, about $25 a session. Your first session is free, and you don't need a credit card. HipTrain is HSA / FSA eligible, though you should check your own plan. One member put it simply: "It is really easy to sign up and make schedule changes." (Bruce W., Google review)
Where we're not the right fit: Trainwell has thousands of App Store ratings and we have 29. Our coach roster is small. You do need to show up on camera at a set time. And we don't offer nutrition or dietitian coaching, a large on-demand workout library, or in-person training. For a closer look, see HipTrain vs Trainwell.
Best for: people who want a real coach live on camera each week, at a lower monthly cost than Trainwell's listed price.
Future calls itself "Personal training, reimagined." Like Trainwell, it coaches mainly through the app: your coach programs workouts and texts with you. Future does not advertise live sessions. It costs $199/mo, with a $50 first month, or $149/mo if you prepay for 12 months. Future offers a 30-day full refund and says it's HSA/FSA eligible through Truemed. It has a 4.87 rating from 10,714 iOS ratings. More in HipTrain vs Future.
Best for: people who like app-based coaching and want a low-cost first month to try it.
Caliber's tagline is "It's not you. It's the science." You can start with the free app, move to Pro at $19/mo for group coaching, or choose Premium 1-on-1 coaching. Premium works through the app with video check-ins, costs about $200/mo, and is sold through a consultation call. Trial terms and HSA/FSA details: Not published. Caliber has a 4.84 rating from 5,985 iOS ratings. More in HipTrain vs Caliber.
Best for: people who want a strength plan they can start for free.
Echelon Coach (formerly FlexIt) is one of the few other services built on live 1-on-1 video. Garage Gym Reviews named FlexIt its "Best Live Training" pick. Echelon Coach lists $36 to $40 per 30-minute session and $72 to $80 per 60-minute session, with packs from about $30.60. The first session is free or $5. HSA/FSA: Not published. Best for: people who want live training without a monthly plan.
Kickoff matches you with a coach who is both a dietitian and a trainer. You get a weekly video call and daily texts. Kickoff says it's "$0 out-of-pocket" through insurance with Aetna, Cigna, UHC, BCBS and 100+ plans, and $250/mo if you pay yourself. It offers a coach-swap guarantee and has a 4.83 rating from 3,932 iOS ratings. More in HipTrain vs Kickoff.
Best for: people who want food and exercise coaching in one place, especially if insurance covers it.
Trainwell may still be your best choice. Stay if:
