Online personal trainer for women

A real coach on video, the same one each week, fitting around work, family and everything else you carry.

★★★★★ 5.0 on GoogleFrom $14 a sessionFirst session free, no cardHSA / FSA eligible

This page is for women who want a personal trainer but not the gym that comes with one: no commute, no crowd, no feeling watched by strangers. HipTrain is live 1-on-1 personal training over video. You see the same certified coach each session, they coach you in real time, prices start at about $14 a session, and your first session is free.

The short version

  • Women are less likely than men to get the strength training that guidelines recommend. A booked session with a coach is a simple way to change that.
  • You train at home, at a time you pick, and your coach watches your form the whole way.
  • Coaches teach strength, Pilates, mobility, HIIT, stretching and functional training, so you can mix it up.
  • No gym or equipment needed. Thirty minutes is enough to get real work done.

Why a live coach helps women

Strength training is the gap. The CDC asks adults to do muscle-strengthening work on at least 2 days a week, on top of 150 minutes of moderate activity. In CDC data from 2020, only 20.4% of women met both, compared with 28.3% of men. The gap shows up at every age. Many women walk, run or take classes, but skip the lifting part because they're not sure how to do it or don't feel at home in the weight room.

Your space, your rules. At home there are no mirrors full of strangers and no one waiting for your bench. You can wear whatever you like, train with the baby monitor on, and stop to answer the door. Plenty of women find it's easier to try something new when nobody else is around.

Someone actually expects you. A recorded workout is easy to skip. A coach who's waiting for you at 7 a.m. is not. You can still reschedule anytime in the app when a kid gets sick or a meeting moves.

Coaching that changes with your life. Bodies and schedules shift: busy seasons, pregnancy and after, perimenopause, injuries, travel. Because your coach sees you every week, they can adjust what you do without starting from scratch. You can chat with your coach in the app between sessions too.

What a session looks like

This is one example. Imagine a 44-year-old with two school-age kids and a full-time job. She wants to feel strong and have more energy, and she has a set of light dumbbells and a yoga mat. Her 6:30 a.m. session:

  1. Warm-up (5 minutes). Inchworms, world's greatest stretch, glute bridges and arm circles. Her coach asks how she slept and adjusts the plan if the answer is "badly."
  2. Strength circuit (15 minutes). Three rounds of reverse lunges, single-arm dumbbell rows, hip thrusts with shoulders on the couch, and push-ups that start at the counter and move to the floor as she gets stronger. Her coach cues her to keep her front knee steady on the lunges.
  3. Core (4 minutes). Dead bugs and side planks, with a Pilates-style focus on breathing and control.
  4. Finisher (3 minutes). Twenty seconds hard, forty seconds easy: squat to calf raise, then fast feet. Quiet versions if the kids are still asleep.
  5. Cool-down (3 minutes). Hip flexor and chest stretches, and a quick plan for the next session.

Another week might be all Pilates, or all mobility if her back is tight. That's the point of having a person, not a program.

What women training with HipTrain say

"I've been using HipTrain to do virtual sessions with Felipe about six months now, and the results are in! Felipe makes every session very fun, motivating, and engaging." (Molly G., Google review)
"The workouts are always different and keep me on my toes. He is a very positive person and always motivates me to do my best." (Rachel C., Google review)
"I've been working out with Gonza and Ángel on Hiptrain 3 times a week and I must admit that it's one of the best investment in myself. My trainers are very knowledgeable and patient." (Viviene, Google review)

What it costs

Session length1 a week2 a week3 a weekPer session
30 minutes$59.49/mo$119.99/mo$179.99/moAbout $14
60 minutes$109.99/mo$219.99/mo$319.99/moAbout $25

Per session, that's about $14 for 30 minutes and about $25 for 60 minutes, since a month averages about 4.3 weeks. Three 30-minute sessions a week, like Viviene above, is $179.99 a month. The first session is free and needs no credit card.

HipTrain is HSA / FSA eligible. In practice, IRS Publication 502 says exercise usually counts as a medical expense only when it's for a condition a doctor has diagnosed, so you'd likely need a Letter of Medical Necessity. Check your plan before you count on it.

For a sense of scale, Thumbtack's cost guide puts a typical in-person trainer at $40 to $100 an hour, with a national average around $55. Three in-person hours a week at that average would run about $700 a month.

When HipTrain isn't the right fit

  • If you want to choose from a big catalog of trainers, our roster is small: a handful of featured coaches.
  • If you want nutrition coaching or meal plans, we don't offer them.
  • If you love group classes, the buzz of a studio may motivate you more than a 1-on-1 video call.
  • If you need to work out at random times, an on-demand app fits better. Our sessions are live and booked.
  • We have only 29 App Store ratings, far fewer than the big apps.

Questions

Can I ask for a female trainer?

You can share what matters to you when you sign up, and we match you with a coach based on your goals and schedule. If the fit isn't right for any reason, you can switch coaches anytime.

Do I need any equipment?

No. Your coach can build a full session with body weight, a chair and a towel. A mat, a resistance band or a pair of dumbbells gives you more options later.

What kinds of workouts can I do?

HipTrain coaches teach strength, functional training, HIIT, mobility, Pilates, stretching and weightlifting. You can stick with one or ask your coach to mix them. See Pilates with a live coach.

Is online training as good as in person?

For most goals, live video gets close: your coach sees you, corrects your form and adjusts on the spot. What you lose is hands-on spotting and gym machines. What you gain is no commute and a much lower price.
