How HipTrain works

HipTrain is live personal training over video. You answer a two-minute questionnaire, and we match you with a coach who fits your goals and calendar. Many people go from sign-up to their first session in under a day.

Then you meet your coach on video at the time you booked. They watch how you move, swap exercises that don't feel right, and keep you on track. You see the same coach every session, and if it isn't a fit, we rematch you. There's no equipment to buy, and you can join from a phone, tablet or computer, on Apple or Android. Between sessions, you can chat with your coach and reschedule in the app.

  • 30-minute or 60-minute sessions, 1 to 3 times a week
  • Vetted, certified coaches with specialties like strength, mobility, Pilates and stretching
  • First session free, no credit card needed
"Felipe is a great trainer. He's very encouraging and I love the variety of exercises and the focus on proper form. I also love just showing up and having a custom plan ready to go. No planning needed!" (Luke D., Google review)

How Apple Fitness+ works

Apple Fitness+ is a subscription library of recorded workouts. Apple lists 12 workout types, including Strength, HIIT, Yoga, Pilates, Cycling, Rowing, Dance, Core and Treadmill, plus Meditation. Sessions run from 5 to 45 minutes, and Apple adds new ones every week. You pick a workout and follow along on your iPhone, iPad or TV. Apple's page does not mention live classes or live coaching.

It costs $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. New subscribers get one month free, or three months with an eligible Apple device. You can share it with up to five family members. Apple Fitness+ is also part of Apple One Premier, at $39.95 a month for six Apple services. You need an iPhone 8 or later, and an Apple Watch is optional.

When Apple Fitness+ might make sense

  • You're already motivated and mainly want fresh workouts to follow.
  • Budget comes first. At $79.99 a year, it costs about what one month of our entry plan does.
  • You want to share one plan with your household.
  • You like short workouts you can start the moment you're free.

Pricing compared

Here's the monthly math using published prices.

  • HipTrain, 30-minute sessions: $59.49 a month for 1 a week, $119.99 for 2 a week, $179.99 for 3 a week. About $14 a session.
  • HipTrain, 60-minute sessions: $109.99 a month for 1 a week, $219.99 for 2 a week, $319.99 for 3 a week. About $25 a session.
  • Apple Fitness+: $9.99 a month, or $79.99 a year (about $6.67 a month).

Apple Fitness+ is clearly cheaper. Over a year, the annual plan is $79.99, and one live 30-minute session a week with us is $713.88 ($59.49 x 12). The question is what you're paying for. Apple's price covers recorded workouts you do alone. Ours covers time with a coach who sees you and adjusts as you go. Some people pair the two: a weekly live session for form and accountability, and recorded workouts on other days. For more on what coaching usually costs, see our online personal trainer cost guide.

Where HipTrain isn't the right fit

We'd rather you choose well than choose us. HipTrain asks you to show up at a scheduled time, on camera. If you want to start a workout the second you have 10 free minutes, a library like Apple Fitness+ fits better. We have far fewer reviews than the big apps (29 App Store ratings), a smaller group of coaches, and no big on-demand workout library. We don't advertise nutrition coaching, and we don't offer in-person sessions.

Who should pick which

  • If you want someone watching your form in real time, pick HipTrain.
  • If you want the lowest price and are happy following videos, pick Apple Fitness+.
  • If you use Android, pick HipTrain, since Apple Fitness+ needs an iPhone.
  • If your family wants to share one fitness plan, pick Apple Fitness+.
  • If you're new, returning after a break, or working around aches and limits, pick HipTrain.
